The Effect of Food Thickeners on the Bitterness and Dissolution of Amlodipine Besilate Powder When Co-Administered with Thickeners to Patients with Dysphagia

Purpose: The present research was performed to evaluate the effect of food thickeners on bitterness and dissolution bitter drugs when co-administered patients with dysphagia. Methods: Amlodipine besilate (AMPB) powder used as a model drug. Starch- xanthan gum-based were examined, swallowing-aid jelly reference. line-spread test (LST), texture prolife analysis (TPA) done firstly. In related AMPB mixed solution, conventional simulating oral cavity performed, amlodipine (AMP) concentration taste sensor output for dissolved medium versus time profiles developed. at pH 1.2 4.5, representing typical gastric conditions younger or elderly people, in two kinds thickener solution those powder. Results: LST demonstrated that fulfilled requirements dysphagia but starch-based did not. TPA, hardness adhesiveness decreased proportionally increased both thickener. Conventional following ranking: < jelly. showed complete AMP dissolution. However, about only 60% after 120 minutes. Conclusion: Although successful masking AMP, they may reduce its bioavailability humans. 7.1 4.7 (w/v) % show inhibition under simulated conditions.
